Lil Kim noticed how luxurious and comfortable it is to be your own boss, having absolute control over her music without some guys in expensive black suits who have no touch with her fan base coming to tell her what to put in her song.
Apart from the benefit of being in charge when you are not signed to a record label, you have the freedom as to when to drop your music without anybody curtailing your success or release dates.
